IMPORTANT INSTITUITIONS AND PLACES IN AND AROUND TRIVANDRUM

1.TRIVANDRUM

SRI PADMANABHA SWAMI TEMPLE.

The imposing seven-storied tower makes it the most impressive landmark in the city. The temple is an excellent example of the Dravidian style of architecture. There are innumerable pillars, intricate carvings, and mural paintings.

                               

SRI CHITHIRA ART GALLERY.

The art gallery has a rich collection of paintings of Raja Ravi Varma and Roerich.It also has copies of paintings of the Ajanta, Rajput, Mughal and Tanjore Schools besides some works from China, Japan, Tibet and Bali. The Zoo:

 Is one of the best-maintained zoos in the whole of Asia and has beautiful sprawling lawns. It is located in the heart of the city.

MUSEUM.

            Situated in the adjacent campus of the zoo with lush greenery, the museum has a historical collection of the erstwhile Travancore dynasty.

SHANGUMUGAM BEACH.

It is a popular city beach adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. An indoor recreation club, a children's traffic training park and a star shaped restaurant are some of the attractions of the beach.

Veli Lagoon (Tourist Village):  It is an ideal picnic spot where the lake merges with the sea. This delightful Waterfront Park has a wading pool, gardens, exquisite sculptures, a floating bridge and a wide range of aqua sports facilities, which give a sumptuous feast to the eyes. 

2. PONMUDI (61 km. from Trivandrum)

An ideal hill resort situated just 54km from Thiruvananthapuram, Ponmudi is an enchanting one for tourists. Best accommodation and restaurant facilities are available here.

 3.Peppara Wild Life Sanctuary:  50km from Thiruvananthapuram, Peppara is accessible from Vithura on Thiruvananthapuram-Ponmudi Road. This sanctuary with its rich fauna and birds is emerging as a big attraction to wild life enthusiasts.  Elephants, Sambar, Leopard and Lion tailed macaque are commonly seen here.

 4.Agastyarkoodam:     This is a prominent peak in the Sahara ranges and can be approached on foot from Bonacadu, which is 61 km away from Thiruvananthapuram.

 5.Padmanabhapuram Palace:     This palace was once the capital of the State of Travancore and is 51km from the city on the way to Nagarcoil in Tamil Nadu.The palace contains 17th and 18th century murals. 

 6. NEYYAR (29 km. from Trivandrum)

Neyyar Dam is 29km from Thiruvananthapuram. It is a picnic spot and dam site. There is facility for boating at the reservoir, a lion safari park and a crocodile farm.

 7.KOVALAM (18 km. from Trivandrum)

            One of the famous beaches in the world, which attracts tourists from all over the world with its unique and eye catching geographical features.

8.VARKALA

            One of the Hindu pilgrim centres and also a beautiful beach. The mineral springs of Varkala are quite interesting.

9. KOLLAM (QUILON)

 THANGASSERY LIGHT HOUSE

It is situated 5 km from Kollam town. This seaside village of historic importance has the ruins of an Old Portuguese fort and churches, which was built in the 18th century. The chief attraction of the place is the lighthouse, built in 1902. The 144 ft. lighthouse stands as a sentinel, warning seamen of the treacherous reefs of Thangassery.

Thirullavaram Beach

This Beach is at 6 km N of Kollam Town. This secluded beach is a beautiful picnic centre.

10. SHASTAMKOTTA

            It is 29 km from Kollam town and is the largest fresh water lake of Kerala, which is surrounded by hills on three sides. It is a beautiful picnic spot, a health resort and a centre of pilgrimage.

11. KANYA KUMARI  (CAPE COMERIN) –85Km from Trivandrum

Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of peninsular India and the meeting point of three oceans-the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Besides, its importance as a Hindu pilgrim center, it is famous for its beautiful views of sunrise and sunset over the waters. The multicolored sand is a unique feature of the beach here.

12. THENMALA 65 Km from Trivandrum

Dense forest, rubber and tea plantations cover this area, which is 66 km east of Kollam. It is an Eco Tourism Development Project. Thenmala is also a dam site.
